School of Medicine · CPACE
HR
Hooman H. Rashidi
MD, MS, FCAP · Assoc. Dean of AI in Medicine · CPACE Exec. Director
Complementary, not overlapping

Leads CPACE, Pitt/UPMC's center for AI development and validation in pathology and lab medicine. CPACE builds tools; PITTCARE doesn't — where the two connect is downstream, validating Intelligence-Technology specifically in primary care. Also Executive Vice Chair of Computational Pathology & Informatics at UPMC. Built AI-ML platforms including MILO, STNG, Pitt-GPT+, WSI Genie, and Nebulon-GPT, several licensed to industry and academic institutions. Senior Editor of AI for Modern Pathology. CPACE's focus is pathology/lab-medicine tool development; PITTCARE's is primary care validation — the relationship gives PITTCARE a direct line to state-of-the-art Intelligence-Technology infrastructure already built at Pitt.

School of Medicine · Bioethics
DW
Douglas B. White
MD, MAS · Inaugural Director, Institute for Bioethics
Ethics pillar partner

Inaugural director of Pitt's newly formed Institute for Bioethics — the formal partner grounding PITTCARE's Ethics of Intelligence-Technology pillar. UPMC Endowed Chair for Ethics in Critical Care Medicine. Named the Institute's inaugural director in 2026; leads its Program in Clinical Ethics and Center for Research Ethics. His own research covers surrogate decision-making and prognosis communication in critical illness, including a landmark family-support trial in NEJM. Elected Fellow, Hastings Center and ASCI.

Health & Rehab. Sciences · HexAI
AT
Ahmad P. Tafti
PhD, FAMIA · Director, HexAI Research Laboratory
Explainable AIMSK Care

Directs HexAI, bringing explainable AI to musculoskeletal care — where UPMC primary care sees 53% more MSK patients than orthopedics, yet nearly all Intelligence-Technology development targets the surgical setting. PhD in Computer Science (Wisconsin); 45+ peer-reviewed publications. Also Director of Scientific Affairs at CPACE and chairs the Pitt AI Summer School. In May 2026, joined Dr. Visweswaran on a visit to Malmö University to explore trustworthy/sustainable AI collaboration — bridging PITTCARE's informatics and explainability agendas.

Health & Rehab. Sciences · PittNAIL
YW
Yanshan Wang
PhD, FAMIA · Vice Chair for Research; directs PittNAIL
NLP Lead, ENACT Network

Directs PittNAIL, Pitt's clinical NLP lab; NLP Lead for the ENACT Network that underlies PITTCARE's CCES service. Co-authored the widely cited GREAT PLEA ethics framework for generative AI in health care. PittNAIL develops NLP and generative AI methods that turn unstructured EHR text into query-ready data. Separately from PITTCARE, published a 2026 JAMIA paper with Dr. Visweswaran applying multi-agent LLMs to secondary headache diagnosis — noted here as an example of the caliber of work his PITTCARE collaborators bring with them.

RS
Zheyuan Ryan Shi
PhD · Assistant Professor, Computer Science; directs Nara Lab
AI for Social Good

Uses multi-agent AI to address food security, health care, and poverty — with a track record of real-world deployment, not just theory. 2026 Amazon Research Award; 2024 Allen Newell Award. PhD in Societal Computing, Carnegie Mellon. Directs the Nara Lab, which scopes, deploys, and evaluates AI solutions for public sector organizations — a deployment philosophy directly aligned with PITTCARE's emphasis on Translation, particularly for underserved and safety-net populations where most Intelligence-Technology tools go untested.

External advisory board

Guidance through relationship, not bureaucracy

Independent experts, external to the University, who meet individually with the center director once a year and convene together each summer. No committees — just sustained, expert perspective.

Annual 1:1Each member meets the center director once a year — open conversation, no fixed agenda.
Summer meetingThe full board convenes alongside research faculty and collaborators; hears Voice of the People findings; sets direction for the year ahead.
IndependenceMembers are external to Pitt by design — their distance is what lets them say what internal colleagues can't.
